Featured Beverage: Seaview Brut

This Jawny Bakers house selection is deep and golden in colour with a very complex and full scent on the nose, if the bubbles don’t block your scent.  It has a sweet and slightly viscous texture.

With a reputation for being one of the most flavourful sparkling wines available, it is perfect for any celebration.

Jawny Bakers Bar & Lounge

In our Twenty Years of operation we have seen Jawny Bakers evolve both in menu concept and restaurant design. In the last few years, one very specific area of our operation has seen a complete change in its dynamic.

JB’s bar has always been a favourite with our Guests over the years. Back in the day our Guests could enjoy a game of darts, watch local bands or throw their peanut shells on the floor of their local watering hole, the 804 Alehouse.  But as we have matured with time, like a good wine, so has our bar clientele.
When the by-law was introduced to ban smoking in bars and restaurants we seized upon the opportunity to create an environment that would appeal to all of our Guests and move away from the misconception of a “smoky bar" for dedicated “drinkers”.

The fireplace is the focal point of the Lounge where our guests can sit in the comfort of our leather tub chairs. Whether here for dinner, drinks or to catch a sporting event, the JB’s Bar and Lounge can cater to all of our Guest's needs. We offer the same full menu offering as the dining room and our knowledgeable and professional bar staff offers a personalized dinner experience.

Our drink selection is varied whether your taste is wine, beer or cocktails. All our draught have been sourced either locally, nationwide or internationally. We offer all our wine by the glass offering a great selection of both Old and New World varietals. All our classic and signature cocktails are made from scratch using fresh ingredients.

The JB’s bar is a great destination spot to see any sporting event with all of your friends. Along with an excellent audio and media system we carry all the deluxe sports packages such as Leafs TV, Raptor TV and Sportsnet World. You can join the front row at our bar or kick back at one of our high top tables and cheer on your favourite team.

The JB’s Bar and Lounge offers all the chic and comfort of any downtown establishment right in the heart of East York. Come join us for a drink and make JB’s your local.

Featured Beverage: Stella Artois Draught

Another pilsner-style lager, originating from Belgium, Stella is named after the latin word for Star.

Stella Artois was originally developed as a Christmas beer.

Proper appearance is golden straw colour with decent carbonation. Odour is clean with a slight malt sweetness.  Taste brings a hoppy bitterness and a mild sharpness that builds with the tasting.

Featured Beverage: Lindeman's Bin 50 Shiraz

According to the winemaker, Lindeman’s bin 50 Shiraz, 2009 vintage was characterized by some unusual weather conditions.

Aged six months in American Oak, this medium to deep red wine has scents of berry, plum mingled with the vanilla oak.  Soft tannins on the finish lead to a very drinkable wine, anytime.

Featured Beverage: Weihenstephan Heffeweissen (Wheat Beer)

According to the Weihenstephan brewery, “Nothing refreshes more than this naturally cloudy weissbeer with it’s wonderfully rich yeasty taste.”

As a comparable beer, we can recommend Weihenstephan to our Guests looking to enjoy a white beer like Hoegaarden or even Rickard’s White.

This great pint will pair well with light meals whose mild flavouring will be well complimented by this beer.  Recommended with Salads and pasta dishes in light sauce like the Bistro Chicken & Shrimp Linguini.

Featured Beverage: Dark and Stormy

It was a Dark and Stormy night... A great way to start off a classic novel and a great way to start a meal with one of Jawny Bakers’ newest Signature Cocktails.

With three levels of flavour, starting off with the essence of Appleton’s Amber Rum with a hint of lime, then the distinctive spicy sweetness of a classic Ginger Beer and following off with a bitter finish rounds out this drinks great taste.

Featured Beverage: Ravenswood Zinfandel

This California Zinfandel from Ravenswood is treated to a 14 month aging in French Oak and results in a 13.5% ABV. This big and bold red wine is the flagship of the Ravenswood brand.

Aroma of black cherry, raspberry, blueberry and the oak. Fruit in the flavours with flexible tannins carry this wine through a smooth and lasting finish.

Pair with a Full-Rack of Spicy BBQ Ribs, or a dish of Linguini Pescatore or any of our great red-sauced pasta dishes.

Thursday, November 17, 2011

Featured Beverage: Boddingtons Pub Draught

Boddingtons is the sixth most popular bitter in the UK, though sales have slid steadily since 2000. Those who enjoy a pint of Boddingtons enjoy a beer that is 4.7% ABV with a gold body and a rich creamy head, comparable to the head one would expect from a pint of Irish Guinness.

It has a bready malty flavour with grassy hops and a thin body with little carbonation, which is why when not served on draught, it is necessary to be constructed with a nitrogen widget to enhance the foamy head.

This beer is a great suggestion if you are looking for a cream ale and has a great pour that must be seen!

Thursday, November 10, 2011

Featured Beverage: Kim Crawford Pinot Noir

Kim Crawford has been gaining momentum in the retail and beverage market with their great wines from New Zealand.

Bright red with purple and crimson notes, this Pinot Noir has an enticing aroma of rich deep fruit and an alluring complexity of oak. The taste is of vibrant, fresh fruit flavours with nuances of sweet, smoky oak.

This wine varietal is great paired with rich chicken and seafood pasta dishes, with a steak sandwich or even all a wine to enjoy all on it’s own.

Featured Beverage: Kir Royal

The Kir is a popular French cocktail of creme de cassis and topped with white wine. Our version of the Kir Royal (typically with champagne for the royal version) is made with Cassis and sparkling rose wine.

This drink became popular when after the second world war, French red wine reserves were so low and there was a surplus of white wine.

This beverage is typically served as an aperitif before the meal so this cocktail is a great way to start off an amazing meal.

Featured Beverage: Inniskillin Late Harvest Riesling

Late Harvest wines like the Inniskillin Riesling are en-route to becoming icewines and as such are much sweeter than a typical Riesling.

This wine has a nice bright colour with hints of floral and fruit along with a classic honey on the finish. The finish definitely lingers and is not a wine to recommend to a drinker who likes a dry white. For those drinkers looking for a nice sweet wine, this is a good choice.

Pair with nice creamy goat cheese dishes or the antipasto platter.

Thursday, October 20, 2011

Featured Beverage: Alexander Keith's Red Amber Ale

The second of the Alexander Keith’s branded varieties to arrive in Ontario, Keith’s Red has become almost as popular as the original version for those beer drinkers who are looking for a little more caramel flavour and sweetness in their beer.

As with the IPA, Keith’s Red is very easy drinking and has little in the way of an aftertaste and as such can be enjoyed by beer drinkers who do not enjoy the hoppy aftertaste typical of many darker beers.

Pairs well with Great Steaks like the Sirloin Oscar or Baseball Sirloin Steaks.

Thursday, October 13, 2011

Featured Beverage: Planters Punch Classic Cocktail

Those who have been around JB for several years will recall the Planters Punch as one of our most popular classic cocktails.

Beverage ingredients vary depending on who is doing the construction, but the drink almost always contains rum, grenadine, bar lime mix and pineapple or orange juice, topped off with soda.

The result is a refreshingly fruity cocktail that can be enjoyed as a pre-meal starter, or anytime with a great appetizer.

Featured Beverage: Alexander Keith's IPA

October is the time to celebrate Alexander Keith’s Birthday!

October 5th is the day on which we celebrate one of the most popular and diverse portfolio of Canadian beers, brought to us now through the Labatt Am-Bev Interbrew company.

This refreshing Pale Ale is more comparable to a North American Lager than a classic Pale Ale (Bass or Wellington), this beer has just enough of an extra kick to appeal to drinkers who enjoy either style.

A great pairing with the Malibu Chicken Sandwich, Linguini Tetrazini Pasta and our Gourmet Burgers.

Jawny Bakers Features - Tandoori Chicken Salad

This salad recipe is a two stage process. The first step is to prepare the chicken with the tandoori masala and marinade. This classic tandoori chicken recipe can be used to season chicken for this salad, or to be served on a sandwich or (with a large enough chicken) as an entree.
The chicken must marinade for 8 to 24 hours so make sure to prepare the chicken the night before you are planning on eating it. Trust me, the presentation and rich flavour that results from the waiting is well worth it.
Download PDF files for printing at the end of the post.
    Prep Time: 25 minutes
    Marinade Time: 8-24 hours
    Cook Time: 25 minutes
Tandoori Spiced Chicken & Marinade
  • 3 - 6-oz Chicken Breasts
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon peeled and crushed ginger root
  • 1-1/2 tablespoons Tandoori Masala Seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon fresh-ground black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons salt, or to taste
Salad and Toppings
  • 6 cups Mixed Garden Greens with Shredded Carrot
  • 3 ounces Red Wine Vinaigrette Dressing
  • 1 Roasted Red Pepper, sliced
  • 1/2 Red (Spanish) Onion, sliced
  • Crispy fried thin sliced Onions (Onion Straws)
  • 3 tablespoons Tzatziki
  • Fresh parsley, grape tomatoes, croutons and lemon wedge for garnish
Step 1 - Prepare the Chicken:
Choose three medium sized chicken breasts, relatively flat and good for grilling. Pierce the chicken with a fork to allow the marinade to penetrate.
Combine the chicken breasts in a large bowl with the yogurt, lemon juice, olive oil pureed with the crushed ginger and the minced garlic. Add the Tandoori Masala Seasoning, which can be found in the Indian or international section of your grocery store. Add salt and pepper to taste and mix well, making sure both sides of the chicken are well coated with the mixture.
Cover and place in the refrigerator overnight (8-24 hours). Remove from the fridge 1/2 hour before cooking.
Step 2 - Prepare the toppings and grill the Chicken:
Grill the chicken over medium-high direct heat, about 5 minutes per side on a pre-heated grill, or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 190°F. Grilling time may vary depending on the thickness of the chicken breasts. Cooking will be fastest if the thickness of the chicken breast is no greater than 1/2 inch.
While the chicken is cooking, prepare your toppings of Roasted Red Pepper, Red Onion, Onion Straws (best prepared in advance) and Tzatziki. Portion enough for your three salads.
For each salad bowl, make a salad base of 2 cups of mixed garden greens and top with 1 ounce of Red Wine Vinaigrette Salad Dressing and croutons.
Slice chicken in to half-inch strips and layer on top of your salad base. Top the Chicken with your Roasted Red Pepper, Red Onion, Tzatziki and Onion Straws.

Garnish Plates with Grape Tomatoes, Fresh Parsley and one Lemon Wedge. Serve while the chicken is still hot.
Enjoy!

Featured Beverage: Red Wine Sangria

Sangria is a wine punch, traditional in countries like Spain and Portugal. Each Sangria recipe is unique and is a common drink for experimentation.

Jawny Bakers Signature version contains Red Wine, Orange and Cranberry Juices, Fresh-Cut Fruit and an imported Strawberry Liqueur - Fragoli - with hand picked wild strawberries. The result is a not-too sweet, easy-drinking, juicy cocktail which are best enjoyed with friends from a pitcher on a warm late-summer day.

Nice New Review! Thanks Scuba312!

New Review for Jawny Bakers Restaurant posted on TripAdvisor.ca

“Always excels at service, atmosphere, food & drinks”

Stopped for lunch on leaving Toronto. Lived in the area 3 years ago before retiring to cottage country. My wife and I make a point of trying to eat at this restaurant anytime we visit Toronto.

Lunch became an early dinner as the menu was interesting and extensive. We each had a mouth watering New York striploin steak cooked exactly as ordered with a 7 grain salad and warm bread slices & garlic butter.

Drink specials as ordered included delicious house merlot wine at $8 per 9 oz. glass... Just enough at lunchtime. Finished off with excellent fresh coffee. Service was friendly and attentive. Enjoyed the whole meal experience of this family-owned neighborhood restaurant in East York area of Toronto.

Featured Beverage: Hillebrand Trius Chardonnay

This wine of the flagship Trius Brand at Hillebrand Estates is aged in stainless steel which allows for greater fruit intensity. It has a medium body with flavours of tropical fruit, sweet apple and lemon drops.

Best served with Wraps and Salads, this is a great wine to recommend when looking for an “Unoaked” Chardonnay.

The “TRAD” is a beer with a complex flavour and for those looking for an British-style pale ale need look no further than this Ale. Is has a appealing copper colour with hints of garnet and amber.

Also a great pairing with cheese dishes and to those who are looking for a beer comparable to a Bass or Rickard’s Red, or a fuller bodied beer.

Weekly Featured Beverage: Henry of Pelham Baco Noir

Deeply coloured, spicy with notes of blueberry, black currant and briar patch fruit. This full bodied vintage from 2009 is still improving and should increase in complexity and intensity for up to five years.

This incredibly versatile wine matches well with beef and spicy foods, and may best compliment a heavily peppered Beef Tenderloin Fajita.

Thursday, September 1, 2011

Featured Beverage: Beck's Draught

Beck's Original Draught is a German pilsner-style pale lager which is Germany's number one beer export by volume and is sold in over 100 countries. Its taste can be described as sharp, clean and dependable, if a little stronger tasting than an American-style lager.

Those who like it, tend to like a fuller body for their lagers. If you enjoy a beer style like an Alexander Keith's IPA or Stella Artois, you are a drinker who may also enjoy a Beck's. Tastes great with Seafood dishes, any of our Gourmet Burgers or Ribs.

Featured Beverage: Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc

According to most educated wine drinkers, New Zealand is among the world’s premiere producers of the Sauvignon Blanc grape varietal. This vintage is no exception. A crisp and powerful wine whose intense aroma predict some very complex flavours.

A spectacular sipping wine to match with some of our great BBQ Chicken and General Tao Chicken salads and our great seafood salads, the Cobb, and Santa Fe Shrimp or some of our grilled vegetable options, the Grilled Vegetable Sandwich, Roasted Vegetable Pizza and Maria’s favourite Pasta.

Thursday, August 18, 2011

Featured Beverage: Big Rock Brewery's Grasshopper

Craft Brewed with Alberta wheat at Big Rock Brewery, Grasshopper is a golden yellow wheat ale that is light on the palate and still packs a rich flavour and european hop aroma with fruity and citrusy notes. This is why Grasshopper is traditionally served with a lemon wedge on the glass.

Grasshopper is a great patio beer being a very easy drinking filtered wheat beer, much lighter than other wheat and white beers. Despite the popularity of the Traditional Ale and Rock Creek Cider, Big Rock's Grasshopper remains the flagship product of Big Rock Brewery.

Thursday, August 11, 2011

Featured Beverage: Thornbury Cider

Thornbury Premium Cider is a truly original Canadian cider that tastes like a traditional English cider: dry, crisp and premium.

Its made with 100% fresh- pressed local apples (not from concentrate), and crafted in the 100 year old Thornbury Village Cidery in Georgian Bay, giving this cider it’s unique character. The Cider is Naturally Gluten-Free and suitable for Celiac & Vegan diets.

A light and refreshing cider, it pairs well with a wide range of foods, but is especially great with BBQ ribs, chicken, salmon, seafood and pork.

Thursday, August 4, 2011

Featured Beverage: Mill St. Original Organic Lager

Mill Street’s Original Organic Lager was Ontario’s first certified organic lager back in 2002.

Patrons have been enjoying this German-style pilsner with a light and refreshing taste and clean finish that goes well with an almost-light beer alcohol percentage at 4.2 ABV.

Some hoppy bitterness and delicate floral aroma differentiates this beer from an American-Style light lager (Bud or Coors). A great easy-drinking patio beer that is a great summer recommendation alone or paired with seafood or light pasta.

Get to know a street: O'Connor Drive

Jawny Bakers Restaurant got a nice feature on BlogTO's site as a part of the Get to know a Street posting story.

This great picture is selected from that article.
"I initially misjudged Jawny Bakers as a typical bar and grill. It's definitely a little sleeker, a bit of a step up from the local fingers n' fries joint. A glance at its menu will certainly confirm that; Filet Mignon, Linguini Pescatore, and Chicken Madeira in a wine sauce, to name a few items. The green around the back patio gives the illusion that you're dining in some secluded space (despite being adjacent to a parking lot) and the bar boasts an impressive list of domestic, premium, and imported beers on tap."

Celebrate Fair Trade at Jawny Bakers in May!

It’s Fairtrade Fortnight from May 1st through May 15!

So for two whole weeks we want the nation to get loud and proud about Fairtrade by asking everyone to ‘Show off your label’. People love showing off about Fairtrade – tell the world about your cake made extra special by using Fairtrade sugar and spice, your most tempting bottle of wine, your comfiest pants. We want to load the FAIRTRADE Mark with meaning, telling them the tangible difference Fairtrade makes to producers.

Mountain View Estates Coffee - fairtrade certified and shade grown to avoid disruption of migratory bird patterns.
Numi Tea - Fairtrade Certified and committed to Sustainability, Organic Tea Farming, Bamboo and biodegradable packaging and a great carbon offset program.
Ben & Jerry’s Vanilla Ice Cream currently certified by fairtrade along with three other flavours, All Flavours fairtrade certified by end of 2011

Help us in promoting our great fair trade products during Fair Trade Fortnight with buttons, stickers, posters and flyers available at Jawny Bakers Restaurant. From May 1st to 15th promote that our offerings for the above products are fair trade certified in an aim to help producers in developing countries make better training and working conditions and also to help in promoting sustainability. We are always looking at the quality of production for all of our various types of ingredients and commodities and the fair trade certification is one we can rely on and trust.

Through initiatives like these, we can help to encourage the payment of a higher price for commodities which are produced safely, sustainably and fairly. We do this for the benefit of the earth and the environment and to encourage payment of a fair wage and provisions for fair treatment of workers in all developing nations.

Thanks,

Tom Tranmer
