Cocktails and Jawny Bakers

It’s hard for us to imagine a time when a social occasion didn’t involve our favourite mixed drink. In fact, the invention of the cocktail stretches back to the 19th c. when “Professor” Jerry Thomas – a pioneering and flamboyant American bartender - published the first bar manual in 1862. Its popularity and many variations really began to soar during the Prohibition years (1920 – 1933) when New Yorkers who wanted a good time had to find creative ways to cover up the crude taste of bootlegged alcohol.

Then in the 20th c., with the advent of modern media – television, film, advertising – the once humble mixed drink became glamourous and cocktail culture began. Famous actors and historic figures attached their names to brands and the major liquor houses scrambled to keep up with the public’s quest to capture some of this sophistication. We still do. Who doesn’t think they’re James Bond while sipping a martini (“shaken, not stirred”) or on the set of Mad Men when quaffing a colourful drink? Now a $20 billion industry, the art of the mixed drink – or mixology – is here to stay and at Jawny Bakers we’ve embraced it with the same gusto as those early New York establishments.

When creating our cocktail list we took into consideration the same ideals we did when sourcing our wine and beer selection. Just like wine we wanted to offer the classics while introducing new flavours and twists on tried and true staples. As such, we have both our JB’s Signature Cocktails along with Classic Cocktails.

As with our food, all Jawny Bakers’ cocktails are made from scratch using premium ingredients. As in the world’s greatest hotel bars, our trained bartenders make cocktails the traditional way. No prefabricated mixes here. For example our Classic Mojito is made using fresh mint, real cane syrup and Havana Amber Rum. From the glassware to the garnish, the cocktails at JB’s look as special as they are to taste. So the next time you relax on our patio or celebrate with friends in our lounge take a moment to enjoy one of these vibrant cocktails and maybe a small part of you will be reminded of a time when possibility and excitement was just a beverage away.

Getting Our Guests
What They Want

Over the years it has become more and more apparent that people love to modify, substitute and design their food choices - YES even when in restaurants. At Jawny Bakers, it is never a dull day in our kitchen. Our chefs have become very open-minded and never take exception to requests for changes to be made to our menu offerings. It would be an extraordinary day not to see the majority of our Guests checks with what the industry calls “Special Requests” attached! No onion - mushroom instead, dressing on the side, no dairy, gluten allergy, toasted lightly, breakfast for dinner, substitution of shrimp for chicken, to name only a few. While many restaurants flat out to refuse to make changes, others make you feel guilty for even suggesting a change to your entrée choice.

While many restaurants flat out to refuse to make changes, others make you feel guilty for even suggesting a change to your entrée choice.
I know I am one of those restaurant patrons many servers dread, and deem high maintenance or picky.  I am unsure why liking my food prepared a certain way (and willing to pay any additional costs) comes attached with the stigma of being a difficult guest! Admittedly, I will frequent places that are open to accommodating my requests and personally boycott those who aren’t.

The philosophy of Getting our Guests What they Want has been a cornerstone of our operating practices for as long as I can remember. For over 20 years, it truly has become common place at Jawny Bakers to expect people to change things up. How can we not anticipate changes to occur daily, hourly and often with all the food allergies/intolerances, dietary needs, taste preferences, menu fatigue... and the list goes on!

Not only is our team in the Back of the House always willing to prepare your meal any way you like, they are inspired when a Guest asks for the Chef to prepare something “special”. For those craving something not on the menu, we are ready to roll up our sleeves and create!  We are passionate about keeping our Guests happy!

The philosophy of “Getting our Guests What they Want” has been a cornerstone of our operating practices for as long as I can remember.
We are always challenged when a new team member joins our culinary team. In addition to learning the food specifications and cooking procedures for everything on our Award-Winning Main Menu, there is the Brunch Menu, the Children’s Menu, our Seasonal Feature Menu, our Cocktail Menu and now the Secret Menu!  Although you will not find this menu in print, it is very popular in the collective memories of so many of our Guests.

Whether it is because of dietary restrictions, food preferences, intolerances or just the basic need to be Adventurous, a Secret Menu of many unique food choices has been created at Jawny Bakers. This menu has evolved over the years and includes dishes that have appeared on past menus, special and seasonal offerings, or are a custom creation of a Guest's personal favourite. Although our main menu boasts upwards of 100 items, each with unique ingredients, it sometimes just isn’t enough!

And so the legacy of the Secret Menu began... It started small with just a few favourite choices of our regular Guests who just couldn’t let go (of past items). Today, the menu has grown to staggering heights and the word is spreading! Gord knows he can enjoy his Blackened Chicken Caesar Salad any day of the week, Graham and the Friday Night Boys love their Coney Island Fries, Jeff has a variety of his specially designed pizzas, Michelle knows that her Fish Tacos are always available, as are Jill's Gluten-Free options and of course, when Jennifer is craving a Pasta Carbonara we are ready to serve it up! Whether you are looking for a low-carb meal, a gluten-free option or something to satisfy a craving, please, just ask your server!

The moral of this story is… Even a menu as extensive as ours can’t possibly list everything we are capable of preparing for you. So, as long as we have the right ingredients in house and you have the idea, we will prepare you whatever you like!!

Whether you are looking for a low-carb meal, a gluten-free option or something to satisfy a craving, please, just ask your server!
