Awards Season for JB's Too

Awards and commendations are not only flattering, they are a nice reminder that hard work has achieved the ultimate goal: satisfied Guests. They are also a chance to take a moment to reflect on the efforts made to get to this point. At Jawny Bakers we know that the awards we have received over this past year are not simply down to two people owning and operating a restaurant, but rather as a result of all the great things our and loyal and giving staff do and of course, our valued patrons who choose to include us in their relaxation time with friends and families.

So, as summer draws to a close, we wanted to take a moment to brag a little and, on behalf of our excellent front-of-house servers, our talented kitchen staff and our devoted customers, tell you about our recent recognitions.

For those of you who live in the area, you’ll know the reputation of the East York Mirror as a weekly staple for local news, events and public opinion. Every year the paper polls their 40,000+ readers to rate the best service providers in the community under a variety of categories. Under their Food and Drink banner, Jawny Baker’s did extremely well. And given we’re a locally owned and operated restaurant up against large chains with national brand recognition, we are especially proud to have stood out so distinctly.  Here are some of the highlights:

Best Restaurant Atmosphere – DIAMOND
Best All-Round Restaurant – GOLD
Best Family Restaurant – SILVER
Best Local Pub – SILVER
Best Outdoor Patio – SILVER

and for the very first time, we received awards from the Beach Mirror Readers:

Best All-Round Restaurant – GOLD

Even we’re impressed! While it is great that some of our menu items are so popular, what means most personally is that, overall, Jawny Bakers is giving our Guests a great overall experience. Continuing to create an environment that’s welcoming and comfortable has been our goal since setting out on this adventure 20 years ago. It means a lot to everyone at Jawny Bakers that people choose us over all other venues to enjoy their meals and relax with drinks. So from all of us at Jawny Bakers we thank you, the people we love to make happy.

However, we’ve never been ones to rest on our laurels. We know that the only way to earn customer appreciation is to keep honing our ability to meet diners needs on a regular and ever-changing basis. By responding to your requests, frequently elevating our healthy and innovative menu features, and improving restaurant, bar, lounge and patio spaces, we continue to please you.

So please don’t hesitate to offer your thoughts and recommendations next time you’re in. We look forward to seeing you again very soon.

A Lively Beer Tasting

Generous supporters of Providence Healthcare soak up a lively beer tasting by Roger Mittag, ‘Professor of Beer’ with Thirst Knowledge Inc! More than 50 friends of Providence enjoyed a night at John Labatt Hall, hosted by George Macri, Chair of the Providence Golf Classic Committee.

George purchased this amazing prize at a Providence silent auction last year and wanted to find a unique way to celebrate with his friends and family.

The auction prize was donated by Labatt’s and Jawny Bakers Restaurant and raised $2,600 for Providence! An amazing night that will be fondly remembered by all in attendance. Thanks George!

Ménage a Trois Wines

With the July/August Feature menu we will be adding two new wines to our portfolio and using the Feature menu as the perfect medium to introduce them to our guests.

From the heart of the Napa Valley in California comes a new and exciting portfolio of wines that uses a blend of three grapes in each of their products. We will be carrying two of them;

The saucy hints of blackberry and raspberry that the Zinfandel brings complement the generous mouth and fruits of the Merlot while exhibiting the tannins and rich flavours of the Cabernet Sauvignon.

This wine's crisp acidity with its citrus and tropical fruit flavours is achieved by the richness of the Chardonnay while the Moscato adds the wild and exotic fruit flavours supported by the soft complexity of the Chenin.

Cocktails and Jawny Bakers

It’s hard for us to imagine a time when a social occasion didn’t involve our favourite mixed drink. In fact, the invention of the cocktail stretches back to the 19th c. when “Professor” Jerry Thomas – a pioneering and flamboyant American bartender - published the first bar manual in 1862. Its popularity and many variations really began to soar during the Prohibition years (1920 – 1933) when New Yorkers who wanted a good time had to find creative ways to cover up the crude taste of bootlegged alcohol.

Then in the 20th c., with the advent of modern media – television, film, advertising – the once humble mixed drink became glamourous and cocktail culture began. Famous actors and historic figures attached their names to brands and the major liquor houses scrambled to keep up with the public’s quest to capture some of this sophistication. We still do. Who doesn’t think they’re James Bond while sipping a martini (“shaken, not stirred”) or on the set of Mad Men when quaffing a colourful drink? Now a $20 billion industry, the art of the mixed drink – or mixology – is here to stay and at Jawny Bakers we’ve embraced it with the same gusto as those early New York establishments.

When creating our cocktail list we took into consideration the same ideals we did when sourcing our wine and beer selection. Just like wine we wanted to offer the classics while introducing new flavours and twists on tried and true staples. As such, we have both our JB’s Signature Cocktails along with Classic Cocktails.

As with our food, all Jawny Bakers’ cocktails are made from scratch using premium ingredients. As in the world’s greatest hotel bars, our trained bartenders make cocktails the traditional way. No prefabricated mixes here. For example our Classic Mojito is made using fresh mint, real cane syrup and Havana Amber Rum. From the glassware to the garnish, the cocktails at JB’s look as special as they are to taste. So the next time you relax on our patio or celebrate with friends in our lounge take a moment to enjoy one of these vibrant cocktails and maybe a small part of you will be reminded of a time when possibility and excitement was just a beverage away.

Featured Beverage: Stella Artois

A pilsner-style lager, originating from Belgium in 1366, Stella Artois is named after the latin word for Star. Stella Artois was originally developed as a Christmas beer.

Proper appearance is golden straw colour with decent carbonation. Odour is clean with a slight malt sweetness. Taste brings a hoppy bitterness and a mild sharpness that builds with the tasting.

Stella has a great unique appearance that is enjoyed visually almost as much as the great taste.  Accentuates the richness when pairing with a Pan-Halibut or a lobster dish

Featured Beverage: Steam Whistle Pilsner

Steam Whistle’s distinctive recipe was developed based on Europe’s renowned brewing standards.  Brewed with just spring water, malted barley, hops and yeast these all-natural ingredients are GMO free.

This independent pilsner is now one of the top selling premiums brands in Ontario Beer stores, and is a refreshing golden beer, a pride amongst Ontario’s Independent Breweries.

We recommend a grilled meat or comfort food pairing, great for any occasion.

Featured Beverage: Red Wine Sangria

Sangria is a wine punch, traditional in countries like Spain and Portugal. Each Sangria recipe is unique and is a common drink for experimentation.

Ours contains Red Wine, Orange and Cranberry Juices, Fresh-Cut Fruit and an imported Strawberry Liqueur - Fragoli - with hand picked wild strawberries.

This results in a not-too sweet, easy-drinking juicy cocktail which are best enjoyed from a pitcher on a hot summer day. Both the Red and White Wine Sangrias are great for the taste of Jawny Bakers’ Summers on the patio.

Featured Beverage: MASI Campofiorin

The Original Superventian Wine, made from the traditional grape of the Valpolicella using Masi’s unique double fermentation technique, in which the grapes are dried before being re-fermented on fresh wine.

With an appearance of deep rich ruby coloration and on the nose, a cherry aroma combined with a complex spicy bouquet.

Designed to go great with any red meat (New York Strip or Filet Mignon) or any rich sauce pasta (I recommend The Black & Blue) or easy drinking enough to be combined with any of our great gourmet pizzas.

Featured Beverage: King Dark Lager

With an authentic german brewing technique and imported malt and hops, the King Dark is roasted to perfection with a trademark aroma and quality.

King beers are beers for beer drinkers, with rich complex tastes that go above and beyond a standard lager. This balanced and refreshing flavour is almost a surprise when looking at it’s dark appearance.

Great with your favourite Jawny Bakers Gourmet Burger!

Featured Beverage: Mill Street Tankhouse

Mill Street’s Tankhouse is back on tap at Jawny Bakers and we’re happy to showcase it’s supreme flavour and powerful hoppy taste as one of our featured selections.

Those who enjoy a full bodied beer should look to this selection with hints of citrus and chocolate on the nose with a dry, bitter and malty taste.

Pairs amazingly with a spicy dish like the Bayou Jambalaya or Bombay Chicken Curry.

Featured Beverage: J'Lohr Cabernet Sauvignon

This particularly dense vintage is red-purple in colour.

With aromas of currant, plum and cherry, this wine is balanced through 1 year of barrel aging resulting in hints of vanilla and spice.

The rich tannin structure of this wine is pleasantly offset with a selection of one of our more flavourful steaks, like the New York Striploin and a fantastic Rib Eye like this month’s feature

Featured Beverage: Guinness Draught

Legendary the world over, this is certainly one beer that needs little in the way of introduction.

With a passion and fandom that rivals some of the world’s most popular brands, Guinness is the preferred beverage by drinkers on March 17th. You can’t get this beer in Green, but maybe that’s what makes it so appealing.

Often considered a meal on it’s own, it’s also great with any of our amazing Seafood Entrées, conveniently priced at $2 off this Friday, March 16th as well!

Wednesday, February 29, 2012

Featured Beverage: Emerald Moon Cocktail

The Emerald Moon was created as a cocktail of the month in 2009 and has since become a fan favorite amongst our friends at Jawny Bakers.

With an appearance similar to a mojito, but with a flavour all its own, this Gin cocktail is backed by Sour Apple and Melon Liqueurs and toped with fresh line and Soda.

A great green choice for this March’s celebrations due to it’s unique hue.

Featured Beverage: Leffe Blond

Historically brewed at an Abbey in Southern Belgium which was founded in 1152, Leffe brews have a distinctive flavour that reminds one of a more robust selection of European Ales and Lagers.

Leffe Blond (which I recently discovered has no e at the end of Blonde) is an elegantly spicy draught which brings a broad palette of aromas which disguises the 6.6% ABV that always succeeds in warming up a touch more than anticipated, in a very good way.

Pairs very well with any rich creamy pasta like the Black & Blue or any of our great steaks.

Expand Your Taste with Jawny Bakers Wine List

Over the last five years wine has become the largest growing segment in the Ontario alcohol drinks category. The LCBO (the largest importer of wine in the World) has done a great job educating the general public about wine and as a result restaurant guests are more savvy and knowledgeable about the product.
At Jawny Bakers we have followed this trend and created a wine list which we feel represents the Brand and compliments our excellent food menu.

We have sourced our wine both locally and internationally to offer our guests a varied and trusted selection of varietals. We work closely with our wine partners to ensure that we are in touch with the popular tastes and themes of this growing market. All of our vendors are recognized and reputable wine houses representing some of the biggest and well known labels in the industry.
At Jawny Bakers we offer all of our wines by the glass thus giving our guests the opportunity to try any of our listed products. We also offer all our wines by the ½ litre and bottle. As well as our standard glass we can also offer our guests the opportunity to “Jawny Size” their glass to an individual carafe.

Our House wine is distributed by Peller/Hillebrand Estates out of the Niagara peninsular and offers our guest a VQA standard white and red glass at “house” prices. The rest of our list comprises wines from both the Old and New World vineyards offering varietals of all tastes from “big” tasting whites and full flavored bold reds.
At Jawny Bakers we prize ourselves on only using the finest and highest quality products for our foods and as such have paired our wine list to compliment this theme.
So whether you are an inspiring sommelier or someone who enjoys the occasional glass Jawny Bakers is the ideal restaurant to indulge your tastes.
