Hope Starts With You - Silver Ball 2014

We wanted to pause this busy week and take a moment to recognize all of the participants and supporters of the 21st annual Silver Ball for Providence Healthcare.

At Providence, every day is made up of moments. And last Saturday night, we collectively shared a big one at our “party with a purpose”…the accomplishment of raising $1,000,000 net of all expenses - funding that will go directly back to support the exceptional care at Providence Healthcare.

Sailing Away with MAPP

Excitement is still in the water after the 2nd annual 'Providence Cup' Sailing Regatta!
This months MAPP event was simply amazing! The weather was beautiful, the boats were fantastic and simply the best company to have around.

And the winners are…

First Place: Geoff Cornish’s “Rouleur”
Second Place: David Burn’s “Madam Caprice”, captained this year by Peter Southall
Third Place: Michel Viau’s “French Toast”

With these skilled (and generous) Captains leading MAPP donors and their guest to victory, everyone was able to enjoy the gorgeous weather and a spectacular view of the city as they cruised around Toronto Harbour.

Last night’s event would not have been possible without the generosity of our MAPP ‘Providence Cup’ Regatta sponsors. A big thanks goes out to all of our sponsors and donors.

We also could not have orchestrated this event without our co-chairs Dr. Peter Nord and Mike McLaughlin, whose tireless efforts to organize the sails is so greatly appreciated. As well, we would like to thank the 16 Captains who donated their time and opened their boats to all our MAPP donors and guest to ensure this year’s event was a successful one.

If you or any of your guests would like to learn more about MAPP, please contact Emily Dawson…or click here to register to become a MAPP donor!

Once again, thank you to everyone for making last night so spectacular.

BEST TOURNAMENT IN THE CITY CELEBRATES 20 YEARS!

Thanks to Providence Healthcare Foundation for putting on another incredible event! Here is the summary from this past Monday's golf tournament successes posted below.

The 20th anniversary celebration of the Ken & Nancy Shaw Providence Golf Classic was the most successful tournament in our history - raising an impressive $180,000 (net) for Providence Healthcare! We are so grateful to all of our generous sponsors, donors and supporters, who provide some of the resources necessary to continue Providence’s legacy of exceptional care long into the future. A heartfelt thanks goes out to the Founders of the Providence Golf Classic - Gus Arrigo, Bill Cooke and Dusty Miklas - who began this tradition of excellence and who continue to be an integral part of the tournament’s success. Click here to learn more about Providence.

As our most devoted ambassadors, we thank you for not only helping to ensure this special day was a resounding fundraising success for Providence, but also for spreading the word and cultivating those all-important relationships within our community. Please accept our great appreciation for the essential work you do and the measurable difference you are making at Providence Healthcare.

Coppinwood Golf Club was a golfer’s paradise! The challenges of the course blended with the natural beauty of the Ontario landscape. It was a wonderful and memorable day, dedicated to a shared purpose: to honour a tournament that has stood the test of time, and to provide the best golf experience ever! Here are some of the highlights from our 20thanniversary celebration:
·         Generous sponsors, donors and volunteers came together for Providence to make our tournament simply unforgettable. View our list of our sponsors here.
·         Honouring the tournament founders and long-time supporters at the award ceremony. Read the founders’ touching story here.
·         Special thanks to PGC Chair, George Macri, Vice-Chair, Tom Zoras, and the PGC Committee for their valued contributions and time spent preparing for this milestone event.
·         Emcee Ken Shaw shared his personal message with guests; how he first became involved with the PGC tournament (over 15 years ago!); and what inspires him to continue to support Providence.
·         Reptilia brought a collection of exotic reptiles, amphibians and even a few arachnids for golfers to observe and touch…if they dared!
·         Two incredible Hole-In-One contest holes, each with a chance to win an Audi luxury vehicle, sponsored by PFAFF Audi. View the PFAFF Audi website here.
·         Special treats along the course that included: Molson Coors beer and Jack Daniel’s “Country Cocktail” tasting, a mojito station, fish tacos, beef sliders and ice cream sandwiches.

All that we do would not be possible without the help of our community, family and friends. Thank you for your support of the Ken & Nancy Shaw Providence Golf Classic, and the patients, residents and clients of Providence Healthcare. We will always remember the cherished moments and the excitement of the day.
We look forward to seeing you next year at our 21st annual Ken & Nancy Shaw Providence Golf Classic in August 2015!

Warmest regards,
Jennifer, Brianna, Dara and the Providence Healthcare Foundation team!

What an Incredible Night at Cuisine & Cuvée!

What a memorable evening at this year's Cuisine & Cuvée. With so much great food, many cool attractions and and so many amazing people to talk to, it was tough to enjoy it all, but we sure did our best!

Even more importantly, the event was a resounding fundraising success for the important work taking place at Providence Healthcare!

Jawny Bars' Lobster roll was a sparkling success, with many guests announcing their enjoyment of the dish, even on social media.

Here are some more pics from the wonderful event!

And here are some of the event highlights from Providence Healthcare Foundation.

  • 29 exceptional food and beverage donors: The city’s best restaurateurs, caterers, distilleries and breweries contributed to our success and the great ambience of the evening. Click here to view a full listing of all food and beverage donors at our event.
  • Our lucky grand prize raffle winner, Edgar Moore! Edgar took home the luxury Cadillac ATS coupe for his wife. His lovely wife, Gale, has been a valued Providence staff member for the last 25 years. She’ll now be arriving at work in style!
  • Sensational panoramic views of Toronto’s skyline and waterfront that made Atlantis the perfect spot for our “party with a purpose”.
  • Generous sponsors and supporters that came together for Providence to make our event possible and simply unforgettable. Click here to view a list of our event sponsors.

All that we do would not be possible without the support of our community, family and friends. Thanks to your generosity, Providence Healthcare is making an impactful and important difference to those we give hope, help and healing to each and every day.

A Lively Beer Tasting

Generous supporters of Providence Healthcare soak up a lively beer tasting by Roger Mittag, ‘Professor of Beer’ with Thirst Knowledge Inc! More than 50 friends of Providence enjoyed a night at John Labatt Hall, hosted by George Macri, Chair of the Providence Golf Classic Committee.

George purchased this amazing prize at a Providence silent auction last year and wanted to find a unique way to celebrate with his friends and family.

The auction prize was donated by Labatt’s and Jawny Bakers Restaurant and raised $2,600 for Providence! An amazing night that will be fondly remembered by all in attendance. Thanks George!

As a new father, working in the hospitality industry.

As any parents (especially first time parents) know, the challenges of bringing a child into this world are myriad. There are many emotions and questions once you find out you are going to have a child, and this is before the advent of pregnancy has even begun.
For my wife and I the news was out of this world and the perfect ending to an amazing 18 months which had seen us married and proud first time home owners. After the initial “happy” shock had worn off we then started to ask the usual questions such as can we do this, can we afford this, what is going to happen with work, are we going to make good parents, on top of the obvious will it be a boy or a girl!! My wife and I are both shift workers (my wife is a paramedic) and we work often long and unsociable hours so the prospect of having a child also posed many questions regarding our life style. For myself (and I’m sure for most expectant fathers) there is only so much you can do above hopefully being a supportive partner. I was fortunate enough that my wife arranged all of her OB appointments around my schedule so that I could attend and feel included. As far as names, showers etc there was little or no affect on my job and we were very fortunate that my wife had a great pregnancy with little or no issues. The fun really didn’t start until the birth!!!
Once I returned to work my wife and I found new challenges and struggles that we had to adjust to.  As all new parents know, being perpetually tired through lack of sleep is something we know to expect. Working late nights I was able to take the “graveyard shift” some nights when our son was bottle feeding to try and give my wife a grace period of sleep. This didn’t last too long however, as my wife opted to breastfeed (hence making my feeding obsolete!!) and then we were blessed with our son often sleeping mostly through the night. That being said the mornings of lying in bed after a late night at work are now a thing of the past as my son isn’t quite aware of when I get home from work! And it is only fair that if my wife is awake to feed then I can at least change him or play with him in the morning hours. Other than two of my shifts, most of my shifts start later in the day which gives me time to spend time with my wife and son prior to starting work. Again this isn’t an opportunity many working fathers get. My schedule is also flexible to a degree that I can still mange to participate in a lot of his firsts and I have been blessed to see some of his early development and achievements.

For the majority of the working population the weekend is when most family and social gatherings occur, so unfortunately you miss certain events. You hope that there is room within the schedule to work around certain “big” firsts such as birthdays, Christmas etc but this all falls at the behest of the employer. For myself, my employers place a big emphasis on family so thus far I have been very thankful that I have been able to attend most family events. Moving forward the next big challenge will be daycare and who is going to be the prominent provider in child care for our son once my wife returns to work. Family, friends and employers all play an important role in this and unfortunately for many people working in hospitality there isn’t much in place for daycare provisions through work so you have to rely on family and friends.
As my Grandmother told me (god bless her still with us) it is one thing to have a child and another to raise a child. I hope the values and experiences I have found during my life both personal and in the workplace will help me be the father I want to be so that I may raise my son with all the opportunities and more than I was given as a child. My son Charlie has already achieved a celebrity status within our restaurant and I’m sure will continue to be an integral part of my job as my values and decision making will evolve based on my responsibility of being a father.
